I have watched captive Collared Lizards eat sand.
Here is a photograph of a wild male eating sand.
Any idea why they eat sand?
Digestion of insect exoskeleton?

we enjoy you, I know I do!
I have to agree, I think eaten in small amounts probably helps digestion, and they probably get some sort of minerals from the dirt/sand. I know with some birds they use/eat gravel to help things move...
