Crested egg orientation

zachattack Aug 07, 2007 10:51 AM

My female Buckskin crestie just laid her first clutch or egg i should say, since only one of the to was a good egg, the other was soft and deflated slightly. The two eggs were stuck to one another so i gently pulled the leathery deflated egg off the good egg. In the process of doing so i may have slighty disoriented the egg, how much of a detriment will this be to the potentially developing embryo inside. Can i candle them after about a week like leo eggs? to make sure it made it?

You mention that it just laid the eggs.
The orientation is more important in later stages of development where you can drown it by flipping the egg.

More too the point. When eggs are stuck together leave them be.You can rip the outer shell dooming the healthy egg.

Cresteds have hatched on thier own for a lot longer than we have walked upright. The best thing you can do is put the egg in damp NOT WET media , incubate it at room temps ,cover the cup with saran wrap or keep it in a deli cup, dont pour water directly on the egg when the media needs moisture .

The egg doesnt need candling or any attention at all. As long as the egg stays shiny white chances are its ahealthy egg.If it discolors ,gets slimy or molds that is usually a bad sign but dont throw it out until it collapses.

The more you play with it the less likely it will hatch. And certainly do not get the idea you need to open the egg for it. Cresteds hatch in from 60-100 days. If you open it early it will die a slow and ugly death.

If you have to check it.....I would leave it alone. I had a cat knock over a container with just shy of 30 eggs, so far 16 have hatched and only on has went bad its been over a month...just avoid it as much as possible don't give up, or mess with it too much worrying.
