Baby Yellow Anaconda - feeding issues

arturgorniak Aug 08, 2007 10:29 AM

Hello Anaconda forum users,
Couple days ago I got newborn baby yellow anaconda on local show and I have some questions. She spent all her time in the water bowl not even leaving it at night. She will no accept neither live nor thawed mouse but she is very alert anytime I open the cage. The temperatures are around 85F in the hot spot and 75F in the colder part of the cage. Even thou she doesn't eat she will poop everyday to the water bowl. I do not have any experiences with anacondas but this behavior seems to be odd. Let me know what you think. I have her for 4 days so far....

Kind regards,
Arthur Gorniak

You said newborn.....how old exactly?.....Has it shed yet?...They don`t even start to shed til they are around 10 days old.....I had 2 out of my litter last year that didn`t eat til they were over 4 months old, and going on there 3rd shed....don`t worry, be patient...........Mike

Thank you for respond Mike,
It is hard for me to tell her age for sure however looking at her size and body proportions I can tell that she is at most couple months old. What kind of food they usually prefer at this life stage? Mouse or rat pups? Dead or alive? Is her behavior (spending all day and night in water) normal?

Thank you for all suggestions,
Arthur Gorniak

I am not familiar with anacondas of any sort, but with ball pythons and burmese pythons I know mites can be an issue if they soak day and night. Check the head area and under area and see if you see any of the tiny buggers. My burmese also likes to soak after being fed. If yours was fed heavily (which it seems it may have been if it poops every single day) maybe it is soaking because of that.

I'm trying to help, but with anacondas, that's the best I can give.
