Exo terra glass terrariums

colby Aug 08, 2007 12:16 PM

I noticed an ad in my reptiles mag about these terrariums. It's amazing they spend so much money on advertising yet don't tell you where to buy them. Anybody have experience with finding or using them?

Never used them but have found them in every pet store I ever went to. Major chains carry them - Petsmart, Petco, etc. Very few places will ship.

I have one of these. I find that the backgrounds they put in them get punctures and scrapes very easily, and then the styrofoam white color shows. It doesn't look attractive. Also, stuff gets stuck behind the backgrounds and under the lip of the background. I've had a snake get caught under there too.
The screen top makes it hard to keep humidity up, and it is weird that they have a tiny amount of front ventillation... because the huge amount of open air at the top seems to make it obsolete.
I DO like the cage "lock" and the fact that they make an actual lock that fits the hole in the cage perfectly.
It also can be very attractive if you get a larger one and plant it nicely. The small one is much too small for just about anything other than a treefrog or something simular, as after you get a hide and a water bowl in there, all the space is gone.
The price of these things are overpriced in my opinion.
Also, you can't use a heatlamp, because it makes it impossible to have an area for the animal to get out of the heat, so you are stuck with a undertank heater, which is not very effective if you put enough soil in the tank to plant it, and if you put the undertank heater on the side, it ruins any asthetic value the tank had to begin with.

Hope I helped.

I have an Exo-terra too, and I really like it. I agree, they are pretty overpriced (I think its a British company). Mine's pretty new, so the foam background hasn't faded or anything yet, but the background makes it really easy to run wires. I run the wire from my heat pad up behind it so its not visible at all, and I poked to holes near the bottom, so thermometer probes can poke through indiscriminately while the wires are invisible behind it (there's a good setup up top that allows wires to go through while the lid is closed. I haven't been able to find a lock that fits their latch, so its good to hear that they make one. I'll have to look into it.

All in all I'd recommend one if you don't mind spending the money (I bought mine online with many other things and had them all shipped).
