Teacing a Dragon to Drink Water

khandof Aug 08, 2007 02:00 PM

Is their a way to teach a dragon to drink water? When I bathe my dragon he doesn't drink the water. I don't keep water in his cage and all the water he get is from the veggies (When he eats them). Urinate (I think I spelled that wrong) is present when he poops. A side of me says I have nothing to worry about if the urinate is present, but I'd feel much better if I saw him drinking the water.

Thanks,

Khando

My gal is 10 months old and still won't drink by herself. I dropper feed her daily. When I soak her, I drop water on her nose with a medicine dropper, and sometimes it stimulates her drinking response and she'll drink on her own. But besides that, I gotta hand-water her. Kinda makes ya wonder how they survive in the wild, eh?

I do not keep dragons currently or know the exact process but will point you in the right direction.

This link is to the website of a Dragon breeder who water bowl trains all of her Dragons before putting them out for sale. As a result her caresheet requires you supply a water bowl for dragons from her.

Unfortunately the site does not tell how she trains them but I am sure you could contact her to fins out how it is done.

Hope this was helpfull and please repost what you find out for others.

Sean.

Mine does. I start by putting both his front feet in the bowl of water. If this doesn't immediately get him to drink, I then dip my finger in the water and let it drip on his snout, starting the process. As he's licking his lips from the water, I stick my finger back into the bowl and jiggle it around, which causes the water to splash around. Then he'll dip his head right in and start guzzling. It's gotten to the point where he HATES being spritzed with water bottles, and only drinks from bowls or his bath.

I've never seen any of mine drink from a water bowl or in the bath. Frankly I'd hate it if they drank in the bath as the often poop there. Occaisionally I offer water with an eyedropper especially when they are near time to lay eggs or for a few days after they lay eggs.

How much water they need is really dependant on your setup. I rarely if ever have to give water except for gravid females and babies. I never spray my adults except as a shedding aid.

I've tried dropping a little water on the nose of my deagon and I have not being successful. I guess I'll keep trying.

There's some serious husbandry issues with that dragon if he needs to drink that much water. Even after laying eggs mine won't drink that much.

ROFL Maybe it's not water! *wink*

Similar to what the kid in the Youtube video does, I've never had a problem getting my dragons to drink water, possibly because my 3 (Except the small female I got yesterday) were all adopted, full healthy adults by the time I got them.

The dragons react to movement, by taking a small spray bottle and spraying the water bowl it draws the attention of the dragon who in most cases will come around to inspect it, as the dragon finds the spray and drinks it, it will often find itself drawn to the bowl and start drinking the water collected there.

After a time I've found I don't need that attraction to the bowl to get them to drink and they will do it whenever they find it necessary.

Of course they do bathe in the bowls as well which has me changing the water often.
Ah well, it gives time to interact with the dragons.
