Please help...constipation or impaction

NatalieD Aug 19, 2003 08:55 PM

Please help. I went to Daytona and bought a 5 month old beardie from a well know breeder. He is georgeous, but he hasn't had a pooped yet. I got him Sat. afternoon. So from Sat. around 4 until today nothing. I put him in warm water 2 times today and still nothing. He isn't eating much either. About 10 crickets a day. He was on sand at Daytona but I have him on paper towels. Won't touch his veggies. I have the temp. right, lighting right. I haven't had the first problem with the first beardie that I got and I am stumped. My questions are....How warm can the bath water be? He isn't trying to go. (no straining or trying to stay off his tummy, is fine when you hold him)so is it normal for him not to go in 3 days when you first get him home? Does this sound like impaction or constipation? Should I offer him some veggies like ice burg lettuce to get extra moisture in him?

Please help I want to get this before he does becomes lathargic and sick!!!!!

Step 1: contact the breeder!!!

most dragons take a few days to a week to get acclimated to their new settings. As long as he is eating the right size crix, 10 a day is fine. make sure you use suppliments. contact the breeder you got him from to find out what they fed, temps etc... some breeders use only pellets and occationally supliment with crix. best bet is to duplicate what the breeder did and if you want to change, do it gradually.

good luck

If you've ever bathed a baby, it should be around the same temp. If you haven't... uuhh... it should feel slightly warm to the touch. Usually if you get them swimming a bit they'll go. Kinda take him on your finger and slowly move him around and he should start to swim. In a sink that is sloped, like a bathroom sink, it is easy to make an area where they can stand and one where they can't.

and are dealing with it also now with the Snow I got, he has not gone to the bathroom either and soaks do not work. Trying to get fluids into him is like trying to pry open a lead door with a stick.

They have traveled many times across the country and been shipped the day before the vendors arrive. Then on view for a few days with strangers, they are majorly stressed and usually somewhat dehydrated, so of course will not poo. We've had this also in the past and within the week they usually return to what a dragon should be and do. Just try not to handle them too much and let them learn things are good here, keep up the soaks and offer them diluted gatoraid, its the second week I really start to worry and will try to feed baby food if they are not eating and going to the bathroom good.
