Golden corns hatch - (PROVEN OUT)

BlueKing Aug 09, 2007 09:43 AM

These babies are the result of a son-to-mother breeding. Originally 16 eggs were laid (six infertile, and one died late in development) resulting in nine hatchlings. As you can see by the picture, six are gold, and three are hets (the three hets are in the top and bottom right corners of the pic. All babies are currently pre - shed). Considering the odds and infertile eggs I've had - not a bad ratio!
It's just a shame that the four 05' het females were borderline breeding age and did not produce for me this year. So six golden corns is all I produced this year. But I'm happy with the results. I will post more pics of them later on after they shed.
For any of you that are going: See you in Daytona - I will be at one of the "rookie" tables near the entrance!!!
Thanks for looking.

Zee

That is really cool. It is hard for me to tell the hets from the morphs apart in the pic but I bet that will change after a few sheds, and I look forward to seeing these guys after they mature a bit. I am gonna be at tables #373 #456 with your buddy Todd Hughes helping me. I am sure I will see you there.

I use a Sony Cybershot 4.1 megapixel myself. I find it is very easy to get good pics with it but of course some days I can not get a decent pic no matter how hard I try. Outside it really captures the colors, but since I have a school in my backyard bringing snakes outside is not always the best idea. I am sure we'll get to hang for a few at the Expo. Tom Stevens

Thanks - looking forward to it!
(My cam is a sony cybershot 7.2). But it just might help me to figure out how to use it a little better!

I just popped in to see if there were any postings by you. Good timing. Didn't you produce some goldens last year or were they all hets? I'm retarded when it comes to genetics. You could say I'm genetically retarded I guess.

Yeah I said it.

BlueKing Aug 09, 2007 04:30 PM

Thanks...
You are not alone, lol! I had to revisit genetics myself a few years ago... Last year's pairing with her son only produced 4 good eggs out of 16 (he was a little on the small size which in all likelyhood made it difficult enough just to fertilize 4 eggs) But out of those 4, I DID get 2 golden corns and 2 hets.
And those two golden's are looking better and better with each shed.

Congrats, Zee!

Well, it appears that the coloration is undoubtedly genetic in nature, so you have definitely hit the jackpot there! What will be even more telling is the ratio of golden corns when breeding two presumed hets to one another. If you have 25% mutants in the mix, or thereabouts, I'd say that the simple recessivity of the gene is proven as well.

THAT would be a HUGE step toward the predictability of the project.

Once again, CONGRATS...and I can't wait to see them in person!

(Especially in my own racks!)

Thanks.
I WILL be breeding hets to hets next season. I tried it this year, but the (four) females appeared to be just under breeding age as none of them wanted to breed, even though I left the males in their cages for several weeks. At least two of my het males WERE definetely old enough (one of them fathered those nine babies I have this year). Next year those females will be ready to go.
See you in Daytona...?....

sean1976 Aug 09, 2007 04:54 PM

...you'll start selling hets or even hom's of these?

Also what was the locality background of the mother and of the corn she was outcrossed to? Just trying to get a better idea of how the gene is affecting the underlying coloration. I know you mentioned before but I don't remember what the localities were.

I can't wait to start seeing some hets and hom's for your golden trait hitting the market. That mom is beautiful!

Sean.

BlueKing Aug 10, 2007 10:14 AM

Thanks.
The mother and the original breeder male were caught aprox. a quarter of a mile (or less), apart in Cumberland county NC. Actually I had up to four males from within a mile of where I found her and chose to breed her with the one that was closest to the spot where I found her.
Not sure yet, but I may be bringing a pair of the babies (and possibly mom) with me to Daytona this year.

I am so glad my son wanted a mate for his WC cornsnake that we found just a block form my house a few years ago. Otherwise I would have never went out that night late in Sep and found this golden corn!
