Experienced Spotted breeders hypo?

STUART Aug 09, 2007 11:21 AM

Hi I have never bred spotted pythons before. This clutch was granite x granite. Do the babies normally come out this light pink? Or is this little one a hypo. There are a few like this. Just wondering if this is how they look right out of the egg from someone with more experience with these guys. Thanks

I will start by saying that I have never bred spotteds. And I have never seen a freshly hatched granite.

However, that snake looks very interesting to me. especially the way the head is so light colored that you can see the dark eyes through the skull. Most childreni are born with all the black they will get and then fade as they age.

Please post some pics after they shed.

How early do you mean when you say they hatched in no time at all?

I once saw a clutch of cal king eggs that were too dry. The babies hatched out after only 45ish days. They looked almost piebald. The guy thought he had something really special. Turns out the babies were just premies and hadn't fully developed their pigment. Several died in the first week and the ones that made it looked totally normal after their first shed.

I have hatched several clutches of granits spotteds and that is very common for them to look that way. After it absorbes its yolk and sheds it will darken up and look more "normal".

Stuart,
Here's a headshot of one of those nice light ones like yours at about a year of age. He was actually produced by Ryan . He was picked out for his reduced granite pattern and overall light hues. We recently sold this guy but it wasn't becasue he was ugly! We are looking to breed for lighter and lighter Granites and we simply found another male that was just a small notch better in color. Considering colors can change with age, I hope it wasn't a bad gamble! Email me sometime and we can chat about this if you wish.
Congrats on the babies! They look great!
