Egg Binding

drbradsh Aug 09, 2007 01:48 PM

Is soaking the best remedy for egg binding? I had one of my girls lay 3 eggs last night and then spent a couple of hours working on more, but none came. She was digging around a little this morning, but no egg laying. Any ideas?

Well, I never heard of soaking, but you can have the vet give her a shot of Oxytocin and ask for two take-home shots which can be given at 90 minute intervals. It is the same thing pregnant humans are given to induce labor, but don't wait too long. Give her another week since the onset of egg-laying, and if no results, get her the Oxytocin ASAP. Eggs can get stuck and once they get either hard or too big, you've got a problem! They begin to rot and cause infection which will lead to death. After laying four healthy eggs, mine got Oxytocin and tried and tried to lay. An x-ray showed two large (and getting larger every day) eggs, but she couldn't deliver them. Finally, she came through a hysterectomy like a champ...because I didn't wait too long and she ws still strong...and the results were that the birth channel had a twist in it between the first 4 eggs and the last two. She NEVER would have been able to deliver them and would have died, for sure. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. Still nothing yet. Is it possible that she might still do this naturally?

If a week passes and still nothing, it is doubtful, in my opinion. Anybody else want to jump in here and offer an opinion?

I agree with Maureen. Usually if they are not all laid at one time there is a problem. Don't wait as she will only get weaker.
