dead hatchlings?

oger6 Aug 09, 2007 04:02 PM

So i have some eggs from the same clutch, the first egg to hatch, the baby is good and healthy, the second ones hatched 2 days later, both eggs just the head and arm came out of the shell with a little bit of shell showing. They sat in the egg for 2 days, this morning when i took a peak they lost all liveliness and appear to be dead. The past 2 days they were very alert and kept yawning but today no sign of life really what so ever, except when i was holding one of them in the shell it opened its mouth for a yawn, and other then that it appears to be dead. Has anyone had an experience like this before? I put them back in the indubitable in some wet paper towels (even though they seam to be plenty moist. They both have big yoke sacks, and the eyes are still open but totally unresponsive. Any feedback would be appreciated. They dont have any bad oder or anything.

THANKS
Neil

I'll also be following your post. I just had one hatch (it does have an odd odor) but at first it only poked out 2 front legs with its head out with one of the legs (there was a little hole on each side of the egg...). Because of the odor and slow hatching progress, I went ahead and "helped" it out of its shell. It, too, did a lot of yawning. It's a little listless, but otherwise is responsive and the yolk sac is being absorbed. I wonder if the yawning indicates a respiratory problem?

Every year, I have one or two hatchlings that pip a little bit prematurely, live for just a few days and then die. It happens. Why I don't know exactly.
