Superworm question

sleepygecko Aug 09, 2007 06:03 PM

I was looking to offer some more variety to my 2 year old leopard, who primarily eats crickets (and waxworms for holiday dinner).

I was only able to find superworms today as another option at our wonderful independent herp dealer. I took home two not realizing how big they are and am now wondering if I should just toss them. They are very scary looking food if I do say so myself.

What kind of length of superworm is too long for an adult leo? Does anyone find any problems with these worms for treats?

Thanks in advance, I used to post here almost daily, but haven't in a while. Oh, if it matters, my little girl (yes, girl) is 9 3/4" long herself, so maybe I am just overreacting.

Adult supers are fine for adult leos, esp. one of that size. They jaws are indeed formidable, they can and do bite not just humans, but leos too. So you must supervise feeding (which you should be doing anyway). and you must be sure your leo has a good calcium level, as her jaws must be strong enough to really crush the head of the supers. Otherwise, they arecapable of biting the inside of your leo on the way down. If your girl is healthy and strong, she should be able to take on even a 2 inch super just fine. That being said, I prefer to select slightly smaller supers when available.

She was a little surprised at "the snack that fights back", but really seemed to relish chomping them down.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
