Confused on lights for Mali Uros

Jc024 Aug 09, 2007 07:15 PM

Hi I have 150 gallon tank. 1 Uv fixture (48'') and two basking fixtures (day & night). Three seperate tanks with basking lamps (4 turtles). My problem is that I am wanting to find 1 supplier that is good priced and has everything I need so I can get this done in one transaction....
Any Sugestions?

Things I Need

1. Two 48'' uvb bulbs (uro)
2. Four 150 watt daytime basking bulbs(Uros/Turtles)
3. One Night time bulb (Uro)

If anyone has any suggestions on light types, websites, etc it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Just curious, but why do you feel the need for a night bulb for the Uros? They generally sleep at night & a night temp drop is normal. Also, 150 watts is ALOT for a basking bulb in terms of energy use. Why not raise the basking area & use lower wattage? Saves money. LLL usually has good deals on lighting needs.

I've got a 150 watt baskin bulb for mine, and it doesn't affect my electric bill any worse then the setup for my piranha does... which is very minimal, or I wouldn't still have it...

Sorry. I'm thinking in terms of many animals, not just an aquarium or two. We've many Uros & snakes & cumulative wattage does fight the AC & you pay for it at the end of the month.

yeah, I guess with lots of animals it'd get expensive, but I've only got the Piranha, 2cal kings, and my mali, so they're not too bad

Hold up now, why not use a couple smaller wattage bulbs? I can get upwards of 170 (not a typo) degree basking temps with 65 watt incandescent floods from Lowe's (or the Home Depot, Wal-mart, whatever). And the monitors could wrap themselves around those stinking things. 150 watts is going to dehydrate the cage, and everything inside it, including your reptile. Particularly if you are using a screen/open top like most do here. You've essentially created a jerky machine.

Here's what I use for my monitors. That light is probably 4-5 inches away from the topmost board in the pile. Please excuse the dirty acrylic. The second fixture is for the winter months when I sometimes have to add a second heat source.

Oh yeah, those lights stay on 24/7.

Cheers,
Ryan
