Anyone feed chicks?

zach_whitman Aug 10, 2007 02:09 AM

I ordered a bag of chicks with my most recent mouse order. They are the size of jumbo mice and MUCH cheaper. I just gave the first ones to a few of my big cal kings. Sucked em down no problem.

I figure that hatchling chicks may not be as nutritous as fully grown mice, so I was going to feed 50/50 mice and chicks.

thoughts?

Nutrition wise theyre not as good as rodents, but as CFlowers said it doesnt hurt every so often if youre feeding rodents as well. I believe in varying diets as much as possible for them after all theyre not guaranteed to get mice/rats every week in the wild lol.

if you ordered day old chicks, they often retain absorbed yolk, which is very nutritious. Older birds do not retain this little "goodie". As long as your king can get them down, I do not see any problems adding in chicks as part of a varied diet.

i once bought a hundred day old cockerals and they compress down to fit a med size colubrid and my young (less than a year)GTPytons amazingly ate em.

Zach i feed quail to my kings once a month or so, and i feed them to my Pyxie Frogs also, they all go nuts for them, it is just too expensive to do it alot, also i dont want them to get imprinted on the quail.

When I lived in Morganton, North Carolina it was far easier and cheaper to get chicks than pet shop mice. The breeder I got them from (I think it was Breedens or something like that?)sold day old chicks that were rejects (odd number of toes, etc) for ten cents each. They would be electrocuted and thrown away anyway. I don’t agree they are less nutritious than rodents, but I don’t really know. That first few poops from them is that absorbed yolk- it is pretty bad. Some of the rejects had a big blob of it stuck to their rump. I think a lot of snakes would prefer them to rodents. There's probably more calcium in that beak than a whole mouse!
