Color phase breeding Info/Chart

tattooz79 Aug 19, 2003 09:52 PM

This is my second round of breeding my dragons. It started as a "See if I could" project and my wife and I got addicted. Since last year I have added a few color phases to my collection. So what I'm looking for is a link or info on the cross breeding of different color phases.

Example: Red male/ Gold female= ?
Do i just end up with cross bred, not worth much dragons?????
Or what makes a Sandfire? Is there a TRUE sandfire?

Any info or links would be a help.

Thanks,

well there sort of is, there are yellow phase dragons, red, gold, orange and then a whole bunch of names made up by breeders to describe their line of those phases eg sandfire isnt a phase, its a name, if i had to say most sandfires are orange phase looking dragons, i have a yellow phase sandfire, sometimes the names can represent the breeders of those dragons and certianly a flashy name is great for selling dragons. if you had a red daddy and a gold female you would have red X gold babies, those are the blood lines, whatever color they come out to be in my opinion is their phase. its up for interpretation.. i have a german giant X gold dragon, those are his lines, but he is an orange phase dragon, i also have a hypoxorange/bloodxsnow but he is a red phase dragon, hope this helps some and doesnt confuse, there is a site with a whole gallery of pics, but i cant remember the web addie, if i find it ill post it for you so you can take a look... in nature there really are only a few true colors, and quite a few variations on those colors, hence all the different names, they had "cotton candy" phase dragons last year, very interesting...

A true Sandfire is a dragon produced at Sandfire Dragon Ranch, all others are red, gold, yellow etc phases that MAY have a Sandfire parent, grandparent or even father back. It is the same as a Drachiu, Dunne, Joel or Allen dragon, they are breeders of a line, not a phase or color morph. And each is unique for what they produce.

According to Steve Grenard, unlike other reptiles, bearded dragon color variations are influenced by variable sets of genes rather that a set of dominant or recessive genes. He states that according to breeders who have bred many generations of them, no matter how hard they try, breeders will always get clutches that are 50% or more standard colors and the balance the predicted color combinations.

From our experience, there are no true recessive genes in bearded dragons at this time, people are trying, but as far as we know at this time, it has not happened. One breeder produces stripe patterns each year from the parent dragons, yet none of the offspring produce any stripe offspring. Dragons are just difficult creatures and refuse to be placed in a set mold :D But... we love them anyway!

Ok.......First off AWSOME PICS!

But how did they end up with a REAL sandfire. I have a "sandfire" direct from they're bloodlines, if I breed her with a gold is it just a sandfire/gold, if so are most other names..(snow,lemon head, choclate etc.) just made up by the breeder? And if so.... That seems kinda cheesy......is it for the most part the reputation of the breeder and not a blood line factor? Although that cotton candy is AWSOME!

Thanks again,

Depends, if she is a Gold and you breed her to a Gold the babies would be a Gold X Gold, but not necessarily be gold themselves. If she was a red and you breed her to a Gold the babies would be Red X Gold crossed, but no guaratee on color, they could be brown, gold, orange etc.

It gets more confusing with adding morphs, like I want to breed hypo/pastel x snow, gold x snow and hypomelanistic x hyperxanthic/gold. There is no guaratees I will get ANY babies like the parents or even a clear perfect combination. There are not set recessive genes.

if you are talking about the pic above, hes a german giant X gold, cotton candy was just a silly name for a morph they had floating around last year... havent seen it again, the guy didnt even have pics of them, it was just an example of the strange names people give the color of the dragons
