Bummed.....

rainbowsrus Aug 10, 2007 11:43 AM

Got my first whiff of baby goo smell this morning. Only to find Petunia had dropped a load of slugs and preemies in her water bowl. 16 slugs and 10 preemies. Was in a hurry so I transferred the premies into a tub and flushed the slugs. Didn't see any movement so I expect I'll be flushing the rest when I go home tonight. Mom appears fine.

Not the way I wanted to start my season.

She had no clear due date, only one shed and that placed it almost a month ago.

I'm so sorry Dave. I remember reading on the boa forum or on Jeremy's boa blog that when his first litter is slugged out then that is the start of a great season oddly enough. Glad to hear that mom is alright and the rest of the season can't get no worse so keep your head up. You got some het hypos at least so far so it can't be that bad but Betty won't let you down
Bob

rainbowsrus Aug 10, 2007 12:04 PM

Thanks Bob, just sucks to have my first whiff be such a let down. Petunia's been a good breeder for me, this is her fifth litter and her first bad one. In her other four litters combined there were only 20 total slugs/stills.

And yeah, already have babies from Ann and still have several more looking good females to go.

Just bummed and looking for some support from my buds on KS!!

THANKS BOB!!!!

that sux. i hope thipgns get better for you this season and mmy first rainbow bo litter (also first boa litter period) isnt like that tho i am more than scared of seeing water bowl babies with premies and slugs

rainbowsrus Aug 10, 2007 12:08 PM

Thanks Tim!!!!

If I remember correctly, this is my fourth water bowl litter. Two were fine although one was looking like they were panicking, couldn't get out so I've added a clay dish to the bottom for traction just in case. The other two were slugs/stills so water bowl births are 50/50 for me so far.

Very sorry to hear this news.

I had my own bad news, as one of my Will Bird babies escaped the rack. I locked all of our cats and dogs up for three days, and placed a lot of hides with water and a f/t mouse in them. No luck in finding the the little girl - I almost had no sleep for the three days. Then I had to travel for work, and night number four the kittens found the baby snake, and the laws nature took over.

To make me feel better I bought 3 more BRB's, but I still feel bad. I double checked my rack and only if I pushed the tray, in just the one slot, all the way back does it gap - and just barely enough for a baby to escape.

Dave,
..I hate when that happens. You are probably asking yourself the questions about did you cool too much or too little and did you keep here too cool or too warm while gravid. Sometimes all the parameters seems exactly the same as for the good litters so you do not know what to change next time. I have had a bunch of slugs and stillborns and they frustrate the heck out of me. Sorry,
Jeff

Dave and the hell with that forum. I keep up with it but only post comments to a few people which is pretty how much what most people on that forum do. If you are not a big name or a popular fella then you can expect very little in terms of responses unless of course you make a typo, a little info is off or they're just feeling like pricks for that day (which happens quite often) Stay over here it is much friendlier lol
Bob

p.s. I don't think you are sarcastic when posting but you do have your momentslol j/k You are always informative and very clear when you type using correct terminologies and you are in some ways as knowledgeable as Paul Hollander in that regard so you can't please everyone in life Dave and you know that but keep Mrs. Colling happy and you will be aok

rainbowsrus Aug 10, 2007 10:52 PM

Oh, I agree and for the most part I also stay away and yeah, don't respond to that much. The other guy and I have what I thought was a good history, I even have one of his boas. Kinda caught me off guard. I do try to be correct in my terminology....so shoot me. Can't type worth crap so typo's...duh, in pretty much every post (you should see the posts BEFORE I proofread). And yeah, I love to have fun and playful banter is always welcome. Look at Scott and I.

And Mrs. Colling is the center of my universe and my one true soulmate. 19 going on 20 years of marriage and yes we are extremely fortunate to have found and enjoyed the love we share, not a day goes by that I don't let her know how I feel.

sorry to hear that. You just never know what your going to get. But I am sure you will have better days and more successful breeding results, even still disappointing, but I am trying to say something optimistic. Being a pessimist by nature, I tried.

Next time take pic's of everything, I am interested in all stories involving the reproductive biology of snake. Failures in most instances hold the key to futuristic success.

Appreciate the attempt at optimism!!!

I know, sometimes it just happens. Checking my records, I've only had a couple of years with no washout litters. Pretty much one every year.

Poisonous snakes (aren't they all slimey and poisonous) in there is enough to keep most folks away. Somehow I figured that wouldn't work on you.
