Picky feeders

metalpest Aug 10, 2007 04:22 PM

Last year, all of my pueblans (24) fed quickly without a problem. This year, I have 2 out of 15 so far that are not eating. I've tried:

f/t
f/t washed w/soap, rubbed on & wrapped in pine snake shed
f/t washed w/laundry detergent, pine shed
live

What have I not tried yet?

This has worked OK on my cali kings (especially the laundry soap), but I still have some that won't eat, any good ideas for kings as well that doesn't involve lizards?

Thanks!

Brain'em
use your finger nail to peel the skin off the head of the pinky
that works for me alot

Forgot, I did try that. I used a knife to cut into the head, but didn't peel the skin back. Some juices squeezed out and I thought that was good. I'll go ahead and try peeling the skin back tomorrow and see if that helps.

Thanks for the response!

Have you tried deli cupping them overnight with the pink? Have you tried putting them and the pink into a brown paper bag (small lunch bag), folding the top over and stapling it shut (careful not to staple the snake), then putting the whole contraption into the tank overnight? How about soaking the pinks in tuna fish water (not the oil packed tuna)? You can also try raising the humidity in the cage (I read about this one recently).

Have you tried severing a ft pinks head and giving that to the snake?
Have you tried scenting with deer mice nest?
Have you tried scenting with your dirty socks?

One other variation to braining...is to push a needle up through the nose into the brain...mix the brain tissue around with the needle, and gently squeeze the brain soup out through the nostrils or mouth. This method keeps the pinky solid and directs the snake to focus on the nose.

Also, if you are using pinkies that are "old" most snakes will be less likely to eat them...some snakes don't like freezer burn. What’s “old”…I’m not sure, maybe someone else can give you an idea of how long a pinkie is good for?
