Question...Holding it in...

Ophidia_Junkie Aug 11, 2007 07:27 AM

Just curious if anyone else has experienced this. I have a big normal female, approx '02-03. She's always been on the stout side since I got her. She feeds well, and sheds well, passes well, even seen her drinking, so all appears good.

The really weird thing is her defecation schedule. I've had plenty of Boa over the years who seemed to "hold it in" until there next feeding, then let it all go in one big mess the day after. Some that went once monthly like clock work. some every week. Just figured they all have their own schedule, and will go when they are ready, just as each snake digests food a little different then the next.

But this girl...It just dawned on me that I haven't had to clean her cage in a while (been sorta preoccupied with fixing Aurora). So I look back at her records, and like clock work, she only has passed every other month. A total of 7 turds in the last year. To me, this seems a bit excessively out of the norm for a regularly fed Boa Constrictor.

Some facts...She gets fed a colossal rat, or 2 jumbos, every other week or 3. She's kept on paper, at temps within the ranges acceptable for the ssp, and humidity usually around 55-65%. Always clean fresh water like the rest of them. She had a fecal exam last November with the rest of them, (I do this once a year for peace of mind) and it came back negative for any parasites.

Other than the fact that she seems to hold it in, behaviorally, she gives me no other signs for concern. She's active, alert, no signs of discomfort, thermal regulates, eats well, drinks...I just don't get it.

Anyone else ever experience this? Any good or bad involved would be great to know about. I was thinking, just to make me feel better, of having blood work done, though I suspect it would be a waste of money by returning normal results, saying everything is working right.

I think I'll soak her today to try and "coax" it out of her. I'm probably just being a worry wort though. Any input is welcomed.

Thanks
Rick
