Sick firebelly toad??

zoolady78 Aug 19, 2003 11:06 PM

Quick question for anyone who might have the answer. I recently purchased 3 firebellied toads to go in my vivarium (50 gallon)About a week after purchase, one of the toads looked bad and was moving slow. I called the pet store who told me toad had probably over-eaten & would be fine. It died this morning & another isn't looking so well. Could I be overfeeding? I have live pothos & arrowheads planted in the vivarium with moss on top of a sphagnum moss/reptile bark substrate. There is a 2 inch deep water dish as well as a waterfall, which both have treated water in them & get changed daily. All of my other amphibians seem fine (2 White's tree frogs, 2 other firebellied toads, 3 green tree frogs, one leopard tree frog & a lemon toad) I throw in about 25 crickets every other day & they seem to be eating them all. If anyone has ideas, please let me know! Thanks a million.

parasites maybe.. try taking a FRESH sample to a vet. If it IS parasites, they can give you meds to give him. Until then, I would DEFINATLY set up another tank to put the sick ones in until you find out exactly what is wrong!

I dont know how much water you have in there and what lives in the water but fire belly toads produce toxins when stressed and these toxins could build up in the water and affect them and other organisms you have living in the water

quick story, which has value...
When I was younger (10 or 12ish) I caught a grey tree frog... my first frog ever. Since it was wc, it went into hibernation and died. I went to the pet store and bought a fire belly and a green tf. Well, the firebelly lived for a few years, but everything I put into the tank DIED! The only frog I have ever gotten to live is the whites tree frog that I have had for three years now. The firebelly died a few weeks after I got the whites. About a month ago, I found out that fire bellies are more toxic than I thought. You can NOT put a firebelly in with anything else. Apparently their toxins are SO strong, putting them in with anything else is a death wish. I really ish someone would have told me this before i spent God knows how much on frogs that just died b/c of "spot", but fb! Ok, well moral of the story: You need to get those fbs out of that tank with the other frogs whether the fbs are sick or NOT!
