I'm really happy with mine, and from home depot you can get reasonably sized ones for around 1.17
$1.17 for a large clay flower pot saucer? That IS cheap. Did you lose a decimal point, by any chance? Even the plastic ones made by Duraco cost around that for a 12 or 14 inch diameter saucer.
So while I'm at it I'll put in my pitch for the plastic saucers as hides. They're cheap, easy to cut entrance holes in, and reasonably durable. They're not as tough as the largest molded containers manufactured specifically as snake hide boxes, but they're way cheaper, plus the heights are perfect - nice and low and snug. I’ve always wondered why the snake hide box makers never got that concept right. For reference, the one pictured below is 18 inches in diameter.
Another source for hide containers (he did say “large”) – the tops from plastic garbage cans. Roughnecks are good and hold up well, but the cheaper brands are easier to cut cleanly. Thanks to the Pro Exotics web site for the lid idea. I went to a mom and pop hardware store and asked if they had any spare lids around. The guy went down in the basement and came back with an assortment. I was happy to pay a buck apiece and he was happy to get anything for them. And he got a good laugh when he found out what I intended to do with them. If you tried that at one of the giant chains like Wal-Mart or Home Depot, you’d probably have a hard time finding someone who felt it was in their job description to authorize. I use those for medium-sized blood pythons and giant-sized ball pythons.
