Anyone have experience w/abcesses- face

geckogrl6 Aug 12, 2007 11:34 AM

I just recently took in a rescue w/two abcessess, one on each side of her face, between the eye and the top jaw. She has been to the vet, who says they are filled with solid pus, so they can't be drained, must be surgically removed. Antibiotics don't seem to be reducing the swelling at all. Vet does not know what caused it, but thinks they may be impacted salivary glands. I'm just looking for some 2nd opinions before I OK the $200 surgery. As a breeder, I'm also wondering what the chances of a genetic component might be?

Hi

I had an African Fat tailed gecko that developed two absses on his back, the vet. slit the absses open and squished as much of the puss out as possible. The vet.then would have me take a suring and put Kendall Thermazene cream in it (silver sulfadiazine cream 1%) and then squirt some up in both of the absses sites. That is my experience.

I don't know if this would mean anything to you are could be applied in animal terms, but I watched this medical thing on t.v., to were this guy came in to a hospital with a huge puss filled absses on his shoulder, and the doctor slit it open and wipped all the puss out and put anticeptice in it and then packed it with gauze to keep the skin from closing at the time, because if it did close and the skin healed at that time, it would close up on itself and possible allow another absses to grow right back in it's place. He was told to come back in several days to be check and probable take the gauze out. He was given some medication to ward of infection.

Well there is my two cents worth, good luck.

Take Care, TBL

Thanks for your reply- I did take her to a vet, who said she can't drain it w/a needle b/c the pus is solid, surgery is required. Its looking like that is the neccesary next step, esp. b/c now the abcesess are scabbing, I think b/c the leo is rubbing them and opening them up. I am a little concerned, as a breeder, that they will not recur, and do not pose a potential problem for any offspring. Was the pus in yours solid, like a big a lump?

Some puss had come out,but then the rest was hard, and when I had taken him in, the vet. had to cut them open, and have me put that cream mentioned before, directly in the absess pockets.
