My bearded dragon has a neck lump! help

kapeed Aug 12, 2007 05:18 PM

Lumpy, my bearded dragon, is three years old and was doing great until about a month and a half ago, when I noticed a slight bulge under his beard right at the junction between his head and his torso (you know, right where the beard ends, there is normally that tiny pouch of skin overlying the throat area). Well that area has since then continued to swell.

I took him to the vet who wants to do surgery, which sounds reALLY risky because it is near the throat. He can't tell if t is an abscess or a tumor.

I was wondering if anyone has every heard anything like this happenig before. He seems to be totally fine other than the infreasing mass under his neck/throat area. Eventually I am worried it will close off his esophagus.

Help anyone?

any surgery has its risks, but usually from the anesthesia than being close to the neck. A vet will be careful not to severe important arteries etc. in the neck area.

If the lumb is growing as fast as you indicated, it will only get worse and eventually start causing discomfort to your dragon.

The best person to talk to about the risks involved will be your vet. If you don't feel confident in his ability, take your dragon to another vet. There is nothing wrong with getting a second opinion.
