i found a prett big population of california giant salamander here in the bay area. does anyone know how common these guys are? i'm not sure how many people know of this population.

Dicamptodon ensatus are pretty common around here. I know of more than a dozen populations myself...some larger than others. Depending on where the population you found is, it is likely that others do know about it. CA giant larvae are very common while the big terrestrial adults are quite rare.

I remember finding tiny salamanders in my backyard when I was a kid. I lived in oakland, and found these little guys in the mud while digging around. They were brown and looked like fat earthworms with legs. I tried to keep them, but bieng a dopy little kid, I didnt give them any moisture and they dried out and died.
I never bothered to research it, but still have wondered what the heck they were.
You can find them by the dozens under any covering during winter. I did the same thing when I was younger and they never lived long. Everyonce in awhile I will find an oddly colored one and keep it for some time but they don't make very intresting captives. They are too small for the most part.
