nightcrawlers

I got some today, and put one in his dish. He was very interested and atacked it immediately. He tried that a few times, but didn't ever manage to eat it. I ended up cutting it up and feeding it to him by hand. That's the first time he has even come close to eating on his own, so wish me luck.

Try baby nightcrawlers, or "trout worms" or "float Worms" (AKA red Wrigglers)
I get mine at a bait shop, cheeper than Pet store (big time) and I actually had one pack of red wrigglers breeding for a while (one 35 count pack lasted me 4 weeks, after sitting out for 2 weeks, and she was eating between 3 and 7 a day)
I M looking into getting a worm bin and raising my own on my household compost

what horrors will be commonplace,

Good news. He eats on his own now. Yesterday fet him about a quarter of a worm before he lost interest. I left the rest of the worm in his dish overnight. In the morning it was looking a little shorter than before, but I wasn't sure. Well... a few minutes ago I peeked in on him just as he was getting ready to chow down again. Now there's just the last quarter of it left.

My boy is all grown up now! Now that he eats on his own I'll miss sitting there for 10-20 minutes trying to feed him. HA!

Sounds like you've got him going now. You will be amazed at how fast he grows once he starts eating!
