A question about the pastel gene

CFlowers Aug 12, 2007 09:24 PM

Excuse me I'm not at all got up on ball morphs all that well I keep and breed colubrids mainly...so my question is if you bred a pastel to a normal are all the babies pastel? And what else is the pastel gene being used for? Thanks

No-statistically, half the babies, on average, will be pastels. Pastels are basically "visible hets" for the more extreme "super pastel" or "opal" ball. Just think of a pastel as you would a "non-visible" colubrid het like a het amel or het anery corn, for example.....

Only half of the clutch will come out pastel statiscally. Sometimes you beat the odds and sometimes you dont. As far as what they are used for well, LOL that is a whole other post. Just too many to say (Basically everything looks better with Pastel in it.)

off the top of my head, all of these have been crosed so far and I'm sure I'll miss some.

pastel x

axanthic
albino
lav albino
ghost/hypo
clown
pied
dessert ghost
spider
pinstripe
mojave
lesser/butter
calico
vanilla
cinny/black pastel
sable
chaos
shatter pattern
sulfur
phantom (i think but not positive)
granite
yellow belly/het ivory
fire
woma

I'm sure there are more and when I have more time, I'll try to get an actual list. The one thing you have to remember is that there are several combos involving multiple traits and involving super pastels so the list is really longer than even this shows. It's amazing that people sell probably the most important morph as far as designers go for so cheap. I've heard of male pastels sell for less at shows than normals do in pet stores, now that's rediculous.
