Sexing by tail?

HerbieThePython Aug 12, 2007 09:32 PM

A little while back, I posted a message, asking about determining the sex of a gophersnake. Some said that you can tell by the tail. Here is a picture of one of them. Can anyone tell anything about its gender from this pic?

It's hard to tell from the angle of the pics you provided. I've got all female Gophers (4). If you could post a pic w/ more of a side angle, so you really see the tapering off after the anal plate that is indicative of a female.

OK, here is a picture of that snake's tail from the side. I hope this will help.

At first I thought female, cuz you can see a bit of a taper, but you can also see a bulge below the anal plate which usually signifies male. Sorry I can't come up w/ anything more conclusive. I'm sure Ginter or one of the other more experinced snakeheads'll be along shortly to give you something more definite.

I vote female.

Is that a great basin?

HerbieThePython Aug 15, 2007 07:29 PM

Yup... that's a Great Basin. We have two that we would love to eventually house together, so that's why I want to get the sex (of at least one) figured out first. It's not a good idea to house two males together, right??

I have all females and I still keep them separate. That old "an ounce of caution" adage.

Of course, it would be ideal to keep them all seperate, but I don't have the room for another large tank. So if I could house these two gophers together in my 55 gallon, I could then give my ball python an upgrade to the 40 gallon that one of the gophers is currently in (the other is in the 55 gallon).

Am I correct in this thinking? That there is an obvious bulge after the anal plate on a male and no bulge in the female? In the pictures that I posted on this thread, I can see an obvious bulge after the anal plate. In just looking at our newer basin, I see no bulge at all... the tail looks quite different than the other snake. With this thinking... it seems that I just might have a male and a female!
