There is rarely any hatchlings offered as most breeders are backordered. There are however imports available in the classifieds usually from two localities Surinam and Honduras. I have also seen some offered from Guatemala and Guyana. The animals from South America (Guyana and Surinam) have historically been more problematic as far as parasites and more of a keeled look. The Central American imports (Guatemala and Honduras) seem more robust and they have a solid look rounder bodies. Spilotes are hyper and a hide spot is mandatory and when they acclimate to their new enclosure they will bask openly and the feeding response is a must see. Here are some Honduran Imports and F1 offspring.

What beautifull snakes I gotta wait till at least October till it cools off. I really like the mexicanus that dark orange is intense. For the time being I've got enough babies to deal with 3 blackpines outta the egg, 4 more pipped and 3 still waiting it might not be too many snakes but theres sure to be more than enough poo.lol

Thanks Sighthunter for the info on how to post it makes it hella easier!
And beladona did you have any luck in the ozarks?
Hopefully in about 4 years I'll have some cbb spilotes.

o im going in the early fall and are tiger ratsnakes good trainers for boigas? and is there a particuraly larger subspecies of tiger rat snakes or are they all about the same?

Sighthunter Aug 14, 2007 02:06 AM

The best training for venomous is to buy a rubber mallet and have a friend smack you on the head then soak your hand in bleach for an hour then drink some epicak so you can projectile vomit. There is nothing that can prepare you for the effects of venom, period. Handling a hyper nippy snake will do nothing to prepare you for venom in your system. Ask all the dead experts that just made one mistake. Boiga by the way are fairly mellow snakes compared to Pseustes.

thanks so is there a larger species of tiger rat ? and what kind of snake is that biting your hand lol?

Sighthunter Aug 14, 2007 11:12 AM

Pseustes is the Bird Eating Snake from South America. I am not sure about your motives but most snakes that are handled often will give up and calm down but not Pseustes they gey worse with time in the case of this one. This one is only handled about every three months for various reasons. If you were to take it out more often it would most likely go off feed and die as they stress too much. Why in the world do you want large, hyper, ill tempered snakes? If you want one for handling you will only ruin the snake possably causing it to die. You might think it is macho but they aim for your face and they are very fast. What will you do when one hits your eye? You will have a cool looking eye patch to go with the hand you lost handling hots! LOL, Now you can wear a pirate hat and use the word arrr.
Pictures below is a Tiger Rat they mostly bluff but can still take an eye out. I cannot support your thinking process but mabe I mis-understood your logic?

Beladona I'm confused as well? Anytime you bring venom into the picture theres always the possibilty of death. You won't know if your hypersensitive to the venom till its to late. Being allergic to bee's for example. Theres alot of hots I would love to keep, mostly crotalus. Keeping my hands off them would be no problem, untill one gets sick then what do you do? How bout removing a stuck eyecap? Also anytime you keep them in your home you up the odds exponintially. I personally relate it to skiing, the average joe might go 5 times a year and never get hurt thier whole life,I happen to go at least 70 days a year and also have titanium in three outta four limbs. I like to keep my hots in the field and my odds down. It sure sucks spending 4 monthes without being able to walk but at least i can get better. And a little bit of titanium sure beats the hell out of Missing fingers or worse death. beladona I think you should look at a nice northern pine.

I would imagine Beladona's reasoning is that there is not much information showing severe poisoning from Boiga. My reasoning like yours is that as in Philodryas a rear fanged snake from South America thought to be fairly harmless there is at least one death record from a bite. I just do not want to see Beladona as a first time statistic for Boiga.

Thats exactly what I was thinking.

beladona Aug 14, 2007 02:31 PM

ok guys i understand and i also want a tiger rat snake because there biig and impressive and seem intelegent kinda like a coacwhip

Sighthunter Aug 14, 2007 03:58 PM

Much better, yes they are smart and are awsome snakes. There is a couple from Kentucky that produce a few every year be ready to spend a few bucks. Imports can do OK if they are feeding well before you get them make sure you leave um alone so they can adjust to captive conditions. Goggles in your case might be a wise investment LOL......Bill

Lol that was funny. I have a corn and a babt Texas rat Leucistic. There is a woman her husband had a venemous snake (Florida rattlesnake)that he caught.
After 6 yrs he got bit lost a piece of his hand and a finger and got fined from the state after he told them what happened at hospital .
I dont know why anyone would have a venemous

railrider1920 Aug 15, 2007 11:48 AM

I found a picture of one of these by accident yesterday. I've been looking around at pictures of them. They are soo cool looking. I especially like the mexican type. I think it looks better than the others I have seen. Do you know if the Brownsville zoo has a pair and if they have bred for them? Great looking snake!

Isn't Honduras currently closed?
Or did they open recently?

I wonder if the Surinam might eventually be described as a separate species. They are consistently different then Hondurans - the muddy posterior especially, more keeled scales as Sighthunter mentioned.
