What kind of snake shakes his tail like a Rattlesnake, but has no rattle? Gray like pattern.
Several non-venomous snakes mimic rattlesnakes by rattling their tails, and when it's done among dry leaves it can sound a lot like a rattler.
Some of the ones that come to mind that could have a gray-like pattern are:
Coachwhips
Ratsnakes (Grey Ratsnakes)
Pine snakes
