basic questions

Paul2 Aug 20, 2003 04:05 AM

I need some clarification on some basic terms so that I can muddle my way through some scientific papers (I'm a history/philosophy major, not a science major!). I haven't read any taxonomy in three years or so and I'm terribly out of date (this was the first I'd heard about splitting Elaphe up).
Polyphyletic?
And
Paraphyletic?

Thank you
Paul

And while I'm here; has anyone done any work on V. indicus? I recall hearing that it was really more like a group of various similar species and subspeicies that had never been studied well enough.

Hi Paul,

this link might be useful to you as it contains a "Systematics Glossary"

www.palaeos.com/Systematics/Cladistics/paraphyletic.htm

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Wulf
