moss box help

tim21087 Aug 14, 2007 12:09 PM

So I've made a moss box like in Dave's humidity 101 post and it worked great for two months now. Recently, as in this last week, I've been having troubles with it though. Over this last week I have found mold in the box three times I frequently change the moss in the box to make sure this didn't happen but this week has been bad. I've replaced the moss every time I find mold and I also thoroughly clean the tupperware the it is kept in but i can't seem to keep the mold away. i didn't have this problem at all until now .

My question for you guys is how do you keep mold from growing in your moss boxes, if you have them? Also is there anything I can do to prevent it from coming back? Replace the tupperware, as cleaning it doesn't seem to be working?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mold is usually an symptom of too much water in the moss.

Of course, you already know to clean well, other than that, maybe you have a bad batch of moss?

It is possible that it is a bad bag I did just buy it.

I'll try less water and see if that does anything. My CRB seems really sad though she loves the moss box and seems to dislike the other hides I have for her oh well she'll have to make do until I get it all figured out.

Tim,
..Might be moss spores (is that how moss reproduces?) in the moss. You might try nuking the next batch in the micorwave.

I'll give it a try. I'm not really sure how mold reproduces but i guess it can't hurt right. Thanks for the advice

haha yeah that might be interesting to see my microwave explode into a ball of mossy flames but not really something I want to go through right now.

Sounds like one of those outside experiments. Definately not something to be tried in the kitchen

Tim,

My guesses would be:

1. Too Moist
2. Bad Moss

Depending on where you live the relative humidity in the room may be a lot higher now vs a couple of months ago causing what was working to become too moist.

When I went from glass tanks to cages I got mold (too moist) and it also happened with a set-up that would work in my cage when I put into my rack system. Thus, it takes a while to get dialed in and sometimes outside factors change that throws things off too.

Yeah the humidity has gone through the roof as of late so that could be it. I'll try less water and see if that works.
