Reasons to love full term babies...DUW

rainbowsrus Aug 14, 2007 01:30 PM

1) DUH, healthy live babies
2) No yolk to worry about
3) Eat right away
4) Shed early

My share of the babies from the joint breeding project with Milke Lockwood are doing great. Like I posted last week, all 7 ate and now at 11 and 12 days old, 6/7 have had their first shed. Wow, they are nice looking babies for normals and they carry the hypo gene. Enough chit chat....pics

Oh yeah, most of the post shed pics are after eating, full bellies!!

Jasper, after first shed, note the white speckles went away as predicted with his first shed.

Thanks, she was my absolute number one pic. I had first choice of the girls and she caught my eye as Mike was pulling them out. Stood out from the rest, so that first pic was a no brainer!!

Chuck and Chris are my favs, each of them stand out from the rest, they would qualify as keepers frlom any litter!!

First off, those are some great looking boys and girls. Lucky you!!

So now you have these 7 BRB's that have the gene for hypo. You now wait till they are old and large enough to breed. Then what? Breed them to each other to produce the hypomelanistic BRB? Is that basically how it is done?

Rob,
..The way you describe it would work. I am 99.9% sure Dave has other Hypos and hets that are outcrossed to other animals and he plans to not breed animals that are closely related. I have several pairs of hets and possible hets from three different litters and will probably try to get animals from other outcrossed bloodlines.

I definately plan on NOT breeding them together but to breed them to other outcrossed animals and also to hypo's. The long term plan is to have a couple of fully outcrossed males by breeding four different outcrossed lines and then be able to breed those two males to even more (and each others) het females.

Rob,

A big reason to outcross is that the hypo lines (at least both the Mike Lockwood/EBV and Darrin Bell) have some issues with eating and people are trying to get them outcrossed to get the line stronger (genetically).

I have 2.1 100% hets (and one possible 0.1 het) and have one male and one female that will never be breed together - even though they were bought from different breeders. They are very closely related, and I do not want to produce animals that puke up most of their meals.

Also, people are trying to outcross to get better looking animals - color, and the patterns of the saddle and cresents.

People like Dave have tremedous potential to breed some beautiful hypo's - Imagine a high orange or high red het that produces a hypo offspring. Plus, add in the bullseye cresents, and the potential is huge.
