albino yellow--new pic

fliptop Aug 14, 2007 08:49 PM

Just liked this pic I took as he was in repose. Though the flas did go off, I was far enough away to say the colors are fairly accurate.

It's that WC specimen from Florida, posted on this forum for the first time about a year ago, right? One of the things I find interesting about this snake, is the red skin surfacing lateraly between the scales. It's a little Pantherophis bairdi like, or am I way off here?

Hi, as for orangeish colors between the scales, you are right, they are there. As far as them being bairdi-like, I'm not sure, as I've never had bairdi. Superficially, though, from what I've seen in photos, you are right. I have personally seen some "different" coloration between scales in not only everglades/yellow rats, but also miami corns, where an orange will be creeping in between the scales, as appears on this guy--very beautiful IMHO.

He did sire a clutch of babies this past season, and the babies already seem to have an orange blush to them, which actually makes me think this guy's got a lot more Everglades (as opposed to yellow) influence than I originally thought. all twelve babies are unmistakeably yellow/glades babies (more pics as they develop, as I'm sure everyone's tired of the same shots!).

He was bred to a white-sided female, who had only previously been bred to a white-sided male. The fact that these babies aren't white-sided indicates they are all this albino's kids, thereby sparing me the cost and embarrassment of a DNA test on one of those TV court shows.

And this guy wasn't even cooled this year!

Yeah, I remember you posting about this albino x whitesided cross earlier on this forum. I didn't realize though that it was THIS albino strain we were talking about. Now THAT is a very, very interesting genetic recombination, IMHO.

mots of the black rats i catch here in oklahoma have lots of orange beetween scales there very neet

I caught an adult male greenish rat that has a heavy black rat influence to him. On his right side he had about 3-5 scales that were reddish orange and then the 3-5 scales directly after that are solid white, all other coloration is typical.

I have a male albino yellow rat that has this 'seeping blood' look and I wondered if it is common....

He has matured since this pict. (2004) Grown and the red has richened. I should take more recent picts.

Definitely take more recent pics! Also: have you bred him yet? And do you know his origins?

Sorry, been too busy to keep up.
Got him from a friend who got him from Dwight Good I am pretty sure.
Yes, I bred him. But just to a straight yellow female (so only getting poss. Hets) and got 21 babies with 100% hatch. I am just getting the babies eating solid now. They hatched 7/9/07

I will make a note to get more recent picts soon.
