Jari came through for me...

Jeff Clark Aug 15, 2007 03:57 PM

At noontime today with just 24 hours before I leave for Daytona Jari delivered a litter of 22 live healthy babies. No slugs and no stillborns. 15 males and 7 females. I did not weigh any but they seem to be normal average size babies. My breeding information is skimpy. All I have in my notes was that she was bred several times by Branco in early february. Jari was a rough looking skinny 1992 import. She was a poor breeder for quite awhile but has produced good litters three out of the last four years. Total count of live babies, slugs and stillborns have exceeded 20 several times in the past but this is her largest number of live babies in a litter.

Dave,
..Yes, they are going to Daytona. About half of them ate pinky rats this afternoon.

How well do newborns like that sell? Pre-shed, only one meal, barely days old! You and I both know they are BRB's and if given half a chance and decent environment will thrive. But how about your typical show buyer, are they that savvy?

Dave,
..The crowd at Daytona is pretty savvy. When the show used to be in Orlando there were a lot more people just looking and impulse buying. I talk to people to get an idea what they know before selling any animal. With internet sales I can usually not get a feel for who I am dealing with so I feed a couple meals before shipping. I have also never had a baby BRB that would not feed and have never lost one except for ones born with obvious defects. These snakes are bullet proof as long as they go to the right people. Many wholesale customers want them to eat before shipping but several recently have told me they will take them just as soon as they are born.

Cool, the local shows I've been to have a lot of the impulse buyers. I spend a lot of time telling the buyers the basics of caring for any snake let alone a BRB. Not to say I don't also get peeps that know exactly what they want and how to care for it.

So far I've never taken newborns to a show, always had older ones to fill the slots. Have been to a few where I didn't have a lot to bring though.

Dave,
..I have to admit that I am not entirely comfortable selling brand new babies. On the other hand I am never comfortable shipping snakes and I would have to ship to sell these if I did not sell them this weekend. To me it seems like a tradeoff of risks. Who knows which is the best thing to do?

Very nice litter!! Did you try to feed Jari right away or do you find it best to wait?
