How do you feed Roaches to your Cham?

silvertarpon Aug 20, 2003 08:41 AM

Just curious, These lobster roaches are fast suckers! How do you feed them to your Cham? Hand feed or bowl feed? If I put them in a bowl with Vasoline around the top so they can't crawl out, will the vasoline be harmful to the Cham? Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

I wouldn't use the vasiline. Can they climb out?
I would just put them in the enclosure, andyour cham will probably get them before they can see him comin.
If they can get out, just feed one at a time and make sure they are eaten, lol.
Or, use a deep bucket, or waste paper basket.

I have two females that take them from my fingers as soon I put them up there. The male is a bit slower. If he waits too long, I cut the tips of the roaches feet off so the roach can't climb. Then I put it in the feed dish.
Also, if you refrigerate a roach for 3-4 minutes(after putting it in a container), it will fall over on it's back & you can grab it pretty easily. This mainly works best with climbers. I use this with the Lobsters from time to time.

The Cricket Cup works great for putting roaches in. It has a lid that turns with a hole in the top (careful though, it's brittle/cheap plastic & will break easily). Put your roaches in the evening or at night, this is when roaches are most active. You can put them in the frig come feedin time the next day for easy pickin. Throw some vegies & a peice of dog/cat food in the container for some last min gut loading of your roaches.

Roaches are a bit more trouble as feeders than crickets but they are easier to raise. Probably better nutritionally too.

Not really, but I'd swich to orange headed or discoids...They do not and cannot climb glass or plastic, plus they're slower and bigger, and ALMOST as prolific.

It is so easy to take the number of roaches you want to feed and dump them in a small shallow bowl and not have to worry about a disgusting animal hopping or climbing out! Lobsters and hissers climb out of a plain bowl, Crickets jump out. With the other roaches, you don't have to do anything, it's as simple as feeding superworms! Besides, orange headed roaches are nicer to look at than lobsters. I keep lobsters becaus ethe babies are great for efeeding little chameleons. My little juvinile deremensis pair was raised almost entirely off of hissers and lobsters, I had 10 adult lobsters and 25 adult hissers providing nearly all of their food, and despite the vast amounts of baby hisser that were eaten, I still have hundereds and hudreds of them, some getting too big for the deremensis...
