Anyone keep their Tx Rat outside ?

Bianca Aug 16, 2007 12:12 AM

Hello
I keep my cornsnake outside during the Fall,Spring,Summer (Florida) housed in a large enclosure with branches in shade in backyard patio .
Its enclosed in screen so no mosquitos . I was thinking of doing same with my Texas ratsnake baby (he will stay in tank with screen top).
No sunlight well no direct sunlight . The reason I do this is noticed 2 yrs ago how active area ratsnakes were at night thought mine would enjoy outside air he loves it .
Very active .
Problem is the humidity my corn seems to be more active rainy night but again this is a Texas ratsnake and it is Humid not sure if good idea ?

Any input

Bianca

I keep Black Rats out side and Texas Rats are related to Black Rats. I live in Kansas and it is very humid here this time of year. Just make sure fire ants in Florida (if you have them)do not eat your stuff. I use an underground sump made from PVC as a cool spot in my enclosures so the snakes can thermal regulate to their liking.

I've got a few large ratsnakes that would really appreciate something like that. And the room/outdoor living space to pull it off. HHHMMMMMMMMM? :D

Nature keeps them outside by the million . . . so it should work fine, as long as the snake has water, a good hide and the ability to self-regulate sun and other element exposure, just as in nature. Actually, I doubt that there's a more durable or versatile/adaptable snake than a Texas rat.

High humidity should not bother a Texas rat, since much of their range is extremely humid as well. Here, in South Texas (their southernmost extension), humidity is very high, 90% for much of the summer.
