New Owner - new Red Tail

MarcusR Aug 16, 2007 12:29 AM

I have been lurking on these boards for quite some time now, years actually. I finally gave in to my urge today and picked up a beatiful female Red Tail. I visited the shops around Houston forever trying to decide between a Ball Python and the Red Tail.

I found her on Craigslist, actually the person found me when I posted looking for a tank.

Here's some photos, she's about 2 feet long right now. I am not sure of her age.

Does anyone have any advice that I may have overlooked? I picked up a boa book tonight and will read it tomorrow.

Congratulations on your New aquisition.

Beautiful first Boa.

Welcome to the Wonderful world of Boa Constrictor.

This is your First step into a Neverending and fullfilling
Journey.

Your going to do Just Fine......

Why do I say this?

Because in my 4 years of being a member of this forum,

Your the Very FIRST to say that you BOUGHT A BOOK with your BOA.

I don't know why Most People buy a Boa and they Never BUY a BOOK.

Instead they come to this Forum and ask a MILLION QUESTIONS when it's Preety much in the book.

I am proud to say I Bought a Book First then my boa.

Congratulations and Good Luck.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Ash Lopez

WHo did you get her from. It wasnt by chance Dede Sexton, was it.
She is a very pretty snake

MarcusR Aug 16, 2007 04:49 PM

I purchased her from a lady named Sandra in the Katy area. The snake was originally from Ultimate Reptiles over on highway 6.

she still looks familiar. Dede may have sold them to him. She said she was going to. If that is the snake that I think it is I produced it and she is a 50% poss het albino I kept a couple of her sisters. THey came from a breeding project between Dede and I.

Is there any way to find out??? I know that the lady I purchased it from got her in November. If this is the snake you speak of, what is she worth? I'm not getting rid of her, just wanna know what I have!

I couldn't figure out edit...

So what exactly does Poss Het Albino mean? She could possibly produce an Albino, correct? What does the HET mean though?

abcs_exotics Aug 21, 2007 10:18 AM

Well I am afraid if she is that old it cant be her I just produced the litter I was talking about on June 29 2007. Sorry fro the confusion but she does look like one of the ones I produced.
Now for the poss het albino. When you breed an albino to a normal all of the babies look normal but carry the albino gene. These babies are called heterozygous (hets), albinos are called homozygous. Now when you breed 2 heterozygous together 25% of the litter should be albino and 50% hets and 25% normal. Now the hets and the normals will look the same so we call these boas 66% het for albino because of the normals 66% should be het for albino but there is no way to teoo for sure but you have a 66% chance of getting a het.
Now when you breed a het to a normal only 50% of the babies should be het. Again there is no way to to for sure which babies are het unless you breed them. So if you get one baby aout of this litter you have a 50% chance of getting a het.
I hope that this clears things up a little. In one of the last issues of reptiles magazine that I got there was an article on genetics, you might think about picking it up and reading it there is a lot of good info in it.
Thanks
