Serious ? about size of PETCO males.

jag Aug 20, 2003 09:19 AM

OK, you guys ready... I know its not the best to buy leos form a pet chain store. Well I've been looking into why winky isnt bigger than what he is now. He is 8 months and only weights in at 35 grams. I was talking to angelawina on here about it and her male also from petco is 30 grams but he is two years old. He is healthy other than his weight. I was wondering how many others have bought from Petco/smart and their leos are small. I know this sounds weird but since Tremper can make huge leos does Gourmet rodent make small ones?

Well, I bought her as a baby at 4 g heavy... she hit the 30 gram mark almost 5 months later... and stayed in the 30 grams for 3 months, and then started to slowly put more weight on until 5 months later at the 70 gram mark.

My petCo gal is probably my largest female right now...She's longer than my other large female, but a little slimmer on the tail.
She weighs about 70 grams now I think...this is after laying 6 clutches about 2 months ago. She packs the wight on very well.

On the other hand...
my normal size female(het albino) had an albino baby who is over a year old now and is only about maybe 25 or so grams... My 4 month olds already outweigh her.

I have a male leo from petco and he isn't small. Some leos are just naturally small or maybe they might have internal parasites or had been malnourished as babies, My leo is healthy and weighs about 65 grams at approximately 1.5 years old.

Sometimes when geckos are infested with parasites, like worms or coccidia, they will just have a failure to thrive...not grow fat or gain weight, but not show obvious symptoms. I suggest you get a fecal to rule out parasites.
