??What kind of snake???

tesj73 Aug 16, 2007 09:36 PM

Hello I have a snake that my kids found, they want to keep it as a pet. I have no problem with it we read a few web pages on how to care for them. Although we do not know what kind it is right now it might be a baby, we dont know. WE live in South Dakota, Black Hills area, the snake is small right now it is black and tan top is striped and spots on the side the top of the head is like a flower shape. Thank-you. TES

Usually a striped pattern indicates some species of garter snake. You might check with your state wildlife department and see of they have a local snake species guide. Usualy garters will feed on worms and minnows.

Does it look anything like this? This is a juvenile Brown Snake. They only get about 12 inches.
