Double Clutch & Hatch Rates

Eimon Aug 17, 2007 03:55 AM

One of my 277 alterna phase females has always been a strong breeder. 16 eggs again this year (1 bad, 2 full term DIE, 13 just hatched.) Two days ago when the first group was pipping, she started laying a very unexpected second clutch of another 12 eggs. 8 slugs and 4 that could be ok, but I never put a male back with her. I've never had that happen with alterna (well fed Cal Kings sure.) Never thought it would be a good idea with them either. Anyway got me thinking, does anyone ever do 2nd clutches with GB's ? Interested to hear thoughts and comments. As a side note to some earlier threads, I kept the eggs even drier this year and fed mostly rat pups with longer times between meals instead of mice more frequently, and had a very good hatch rate. The last couple of years I also had a lot of full term dead in egg disappointments. Here's mom and the kids.

I've only had 1 alterna double clutch. It was unintended with no second breeding. First clutch was 11 eggs(10 fertile) and the second clutch was 10 eggs and none were fertile.
