Ok, vomiting from overeating or handling

mamaofporter Aug 17, 2007 09:16 AM

Ok... as some of you know I acquired beardies, a male and female adult just about a week ago.
I'm not certain about which one it is that's vomiting but I fed them about a dozen superworms each and they had grapes throughout the day (not yesterday, the day before) there was vomit in the terrarium in the morning and afternoon yesterday...
I handled them about an hour after they ate.. to soon... or did I feed too much?

That's a possibility... It was only about an hour and a half before bedtime... has it ever happened to you?

It could be all the possibilities you mentioned. Too many superworms, too many grapes, handling too much and if you did feed too close to lights out or the basking temps are not high enough, all of these can cause regurgiation.

I would not offer any food for a day, just water, separate the two dragons so you will be able to tell which one is regurgetating in the future. After they had a day without food, offer greens, no fruit (too much fruit isn't good for draogns, they should only get a very small amount on their salad. A single average sized grape, without seeds, chopped up, is more than enough fruit per serving.) and no insects.

If they are eating greens and neither is sick for a couple days, then there shouldn't be any further problems. If they keep throwing up, or one does, double check temperatures. If temperatures are fine but if they continue to regurgetate I recommend taking them to a vet to treatment.

I've never had a dragon vomit before so take my input for what it's worth. I feed superworms pretty much daily to my adults but only 8 to each dragon. Superworms are better than mealworms but still aren't the easiest to digest. Also grapes should be pealed and cut in half at least. I'm sure someone will say you don't have to but I do. They really don't chew well enough to shred up the skin. I only feed the equivalent of one grape per dragon in a day. I just cut it into smaller pieces so it seems like more on top of the salad. In a 3 dragon enclosure I'm sure that one dragon has eaten all the fruit off the top at times but I've never had a problem. I only offer fruit maybe twice a week because of the high sugar content.
