Yet one more question about the WTF

Voltron23 Aug 20, 2003 10:33 AM

Ok, as stated in MANY posts before, I ahve two WTF's. I recently found a live fern that looked good, so I put it into the viv I have created. They seem to love it! They huddle around it like it's the greatest thing in the world. What I didn't see when I picked it up and put it into the viv, is that there was a little baby GTF on one of the leaves. The two white's don't seem to mind the newcomer, but I was wondering if this is bad? The GTF is about an inch (2.5 CM) in length. They are all housed in a 20 gallon wide tank. Just get back to me and let me know what should be done.

How big are your White's again? They may be hanging around the fern to get to the gtf. I would either move the GTF to another tank or take him back out and release him. Just to be on the safe side.

No, they're fine with the GTF hanging around, in fact... I even saw the GTF sitting on top of the bigger of the two White's. I'm not sure if I should move him, or release him... it's a really tough decision. I went into a pet shop, and they have GTF's with Firebelly Toads. I also have a small Critter Keeper that I could house the baby GTF in until it gets big enough to house in a 5 gallon (not sure how much in liters). I'm not sure... just anybody help

It's always frustrating when you find a frog and it's wild captured-when I do, I always feel responsible for it's life! And I think to myself...if it died, it's because I didn't keep it and take care of it! But I would never want to keep a wild-caught frog unless it was injured or in a bad environment. Actually, what I plan to do and may work for you is release him near you in an environment that's suitable. He may hang around for the rest of his life! I guess another question would be how he reacts to humans. Honestly, if the frog is tame and doesn't seem to be nervous and scared around humans, then keeping the frog would be a good option. There are some gray tf that friends have given me, and I'll keep them for a few days to see if they settle down while living in a cage, and let them go if they don't. Some frogs may never get used to it. I actually hate caging up my White TF's. For the most part, they have no problem being in the cage, but sometimes all they want to do is get out! Sometimes I'll let them hop around in my room or find a hiding spot on one of my shelves...very rarely, and then put them back in the cage. Usually after that, they're fine. Anyways...sorry to stray off the subject a little. Also, if your Whites haven't attempted to eat the frog yet, who's to say they won't in the future? But most likely if they haven't eaten him yet, they probably won't. Another story about my White's-Two of them, Beamer and Cadi, are huge pigs. Although they are almost exactly the same size, if they see each other move when they're hungry, they will try to eat each other. They only try once though, and once they realize what they're going after, they don't do it again. It's just the initial movement after being still for so long. They don't think with their heads...only w/ their stomachs! So if I knew of a great environment to let the frog go in, I would release him. But if it gets along fine w/ the other frogs, or even if you want to keep him in a separate cage...that's a fine idea as well. Maybe he was somebody's pet at one point...or maybe he's just a little baby orphan frog!

He may be fine in there for now, but one day you may find out that one of the White's has eaten him. And adult green tree frog needs a min of a 10 at adulthood (of course bigger is always better) If I were you I'd move him into his own space. Just to be safe and know that you aren't stressing anyone out, ya know?

Oh! And let's not forget about parasites! The green being wild could very well spread something to your Whites!

Okay, the main reason you want that other frog out of there is that you will most likely be introducing parasites to your White's and that's not good at all.

Also, a White's and a GTF require different things. A 5-gallon critter keeper or tank is too small to hold a GTF more than just temporarily, so at least get it a 10-gallon. And your since your White's are only going to outgrow it and eat it, I'd just get them a larger tank (arboreal-high, not long) and put a couple of GTFs in that other tank you have (and make it high also).

And you know that GTFs and fire-bellied toads do not belong together for OBVIOUS REASONS, so don't use the pet store's irresponsibility as an excuse. Instead, complain to them about what they're doing and you might even find yourself getting a few GTFs out of it... Not saying it's the right thing, but hopefully that'll serve as motiviation.

Definately take the little GTF out. He will get eaten by your WTF's lol.

Like the others said also, parasites etc are a consideration here too.

Ok, so... I'm going to move the GTF ASAP!!! Now, since he is still such a little baby, would a 5.5 gallon tank be enough for the little froggy? I really think that a 10 gallon tank would be too much for him at his size. He can seriously sit on an American quarter, and have a little room to move on. I'll move him up to a 10 gallon as soon as I see fit, but is a 5.5 going to work?

wtfgirl Aug 21, 2003 05:45 PM

I know nothing about GTF and their requirements but I'm sure if you kep the GTF in the 5.5 temporarily, it would certainly be better than keeping him in with the WTF's.

As he is so small, this would be acceptable for a little while but you must upgrade it later on for sure.

That should be fine, but I don't think a 10-gallon would be too big, and if you actually plan to move it into one later on, that would be great. But, instead of buying a bunch of tanks, it's fine to just put it into a 10-gallon now
