Ideas on sex?

RLK Aug 17, 2007 10:26 PM

I have a 5-month old sav. monitor and I was wondering if any one had ideas on the sex of it? It's grown quite fast on crickets and young fuzzies and is now eating in front of me with enthusiasm. It's quite a dominant feeder and basker with two smaller savs and they had to be separated a few months ago. Thank you for your time.

For the record, I'm not an expert on sexing monitors. I really think its too young to tell with any certainty, but, I'm leaning towards it being a male.

Ok then I say female, in fact if I was to obtain this animals id be 98% sure to get a female.

The last 1/3 of tail says it all for me, its to thin and narrow for a male.

Allow me to quote jobi in his 2nd post.

Ha! Ha! That's alright, as long I don't cause anyone/any creature, any harm, I don't mind being wrong because I learn from it.

Thanks, jobi & FR, for the input!

Take care!

Jobi's examples are spot on, but they may be very prejudiced. Which means, he may have gone thru 10 or more individuals, to come up with a pair.

I would indeed bet on Jobis pairs actually being a pair, but I would not bet on the ones that did not meet this criteria.

The case becomes, does the one in your hands, meet this criteria? If it does, then fine, but many times it does not.

We have had clutches of similar monitors, Albigs, meet this criteria in two weeks after hatching. Or not until two or three months. But from that time on, they mostly meet this criteria.

Which is funny because I doubt many Savs reach our shores at under two months of age. Of course, it could be more about development then actual age. Cheers

I stay away from the she-males, first when I pick a pair in a shipment, I go for the obvious, nest I don’t believe she-males will ever be good reproductive, being subordinates not Alfa or Beta. Iv been wondering if they are a product on constant incubation? Ever sins I drop my temps at night I haven’t seen a she male with any species?

I am sorry if I don’t participate in your husbandry post, its just that I feel more and more like a newbie, seems like every day I learn something that makes old husbandry obsolete, I guess I will be a student for a few more decades. But rest assured I read with grate interest.

Jobi & Frank,
What about this sav? Female or male?

Background:
Aprox. 4yrs old, 34 inches long, and the owners said they've never seen eggs.

Thanks!

Ya'll take care!

That's OK, , I purposefully stuck it down here because it's related to what we were discussing & I didn't want to start a new thread about her, yet. I got her last Sunday in hopes of pairing her with my slightly smaller male in the future.

Thank you, jobi!
