Leuscistic Texas Ratsnake - Black Scales

SPJ01 Aug 18, 2007 11:22 AM

Anyone ever see one with balck scales on it instead of solid white? Is this a problem with the health?
Reason I ask if it's a health problem is because you could reach in and pick it up. Active snake when held but not the striker I am used to seeing with these guys. A bit of tail rattling but that was it.
Is it worth getting? It looks kinda cool with the 5 black scales running down it's back and it has no bug eyes.

I bought a pair of 05's a few months ago. The female is pure while and the male has 2 black/red scales on his back. I think it happens from time to time. Also the female is fairly handleable and the male hates the world (and my thumb)

The spots don't sound like a health problem, I've owned leucistics with a couple of black/grey, orange/red scales over the years. But mine only had one or maybe two dark scales over their entire bodies. Does your snake have quite a few? That sounds like a neat project, breeding for more "speckling" in the leucistic line. Might be a difficult project, the speckling might not turn out to be a reproducible trait.. and then there is the potential for other problems when inbreeding the leucistic line like popeyes.

While your snake could possibly be sick, I don't think the dark scales are the cause.
