Releasing Hatchlings

jack17 Aug 18, 2007 01:00 PM

I am considering releasing into the wild some hatchling Eastern Box turtles. These baby turtles have been incubated and have never been exposed to any other adult turtles.

What is the best age to do that? As hatchlings or later as head started juveniles. If later is the answer; what is the optimum age of “head started juveniles?

Waht I do is hibernate my hatchlings. In the spring after they come out of hiberanation I feed them a few worms then I release them. But i dont see anything wrong with releasing them now. Im sure they will be able to find a nice place on there own to hibernate.

The box turtle headstart programs that I know of, and on which I base my protocol, strive for 2yrs/200g or thereabouts. The idea is that 200g size is big enough to resist more predators, and 2 yrs is young enough to adapt more readily to new surroundings.
