How often do they shed

BigFil Aug 20, 2003 11:15 AM

Hello everyone! I have been a silent observer for a few weeks and have seen an answer to almost every question I have had with very knowledgeable information. I have had my first BD for 3 weeks now "Gollum" who is about 5 inches from snout to the tip of his stub tail, probably 6-6.5 inches if he had his full tail. My question is how often do they shed thier skin at his age which I am guessing is 2-3 months? I have yet to see him shed so I am curious.

Hello and Welcome!!

I think that how often they shed depends on how much/fast they are growing. And yes, he could easily shed at this age.
-My 5 week old baby beardies are starting to shed for the first time now...
btw, I like your beardy's name!

I'm no expert on this but my girl sheds about every 3-5 weeks. I think they will shed more at younger ages as they are growing faster than when they become adults. Also, make sure you have the humidity it the tank. More humidity helps in the shedding process. Make sure you save his first shed for the shed fairy and give him a big worm as a treat. This is a shot of my girl at the end of her shed, you can see on the side of her head.

I think it varies with each dragon. My oldest, a male, hasn't shed all that much, but his growth has been slower, something I wouldn't notice day by day. My middle dragon,a female, suddenly exploded overnight from a really small baby dragon to a good sized adult. For her, it seems like as soon as she finishes a shed, she goes into another, maybe every 2 weeks or so. My youngest dragon, also a female, is still small, and really a juvenile, and she doesn't seem to shed her full body, but sheds sections every 3 weeks or so.

By the way one thing to watch for: nose plugs (not sure if thats the official term, if there is one) My middle dragon has a very hard time around her nostrils, and almost always has nose plugs of shedding skin. I know you're not supposed to help by pulling off shedding skin, but the plugs do lead her to breathe through her mouth, so I pull them out. Always amazed at how long they are too.
