Auratus in a 72g, how many? What ratio? Plus q's on live food

Hlynn1975 Aug 20, 2003 11:20 AM

The title just about says it all. I have one young green and bronze auratus and when he/she/it gets bigger I will put it into a 72g that I am currently converting into a fish tank. How many of these guys can I put into my 72? And what sex ratio should I use?

Also, I just ordered some springtails and confused flour beetles to supplement the fruit flies. For the springtails can I use fish tank carbon? And what kind of flour should I give the beetles? And how do I provide them with moisture?

Thanks,
Heather

Well dart frogs arent much of an aquatic frog....

Im not sure about the sex ratio, if they are babys the sex wont be possible to tell for about a year so its impossible to tell. Im not sure how many in a 72 gallon. I havent looked into autarus but i do know tehy are a "community" type frog so i would say 10 atleast. *But im not sure dont quote me on that*

as for the food questions, this is directly from eds fly meat website:

Rice Flour Beetles

These are a most excellent additional food source for your herp. They are a little tougher to feed, but well worth it!

Do:

Keep the cultures above room temperature. These guys like it warm, about 80-85 degrees. They can tolerate lower temps but will just breed slower.

Feed only the larvae.

To feed, use a wire mesh strainer and strain out all the flour media. You should only have larvae and beetles left in the strainer. Let that sit over a bowl and the larvae will crawl through the strainer into the bowl and the beetles will stay where they are. Be sure to put the beetles back into your culture as they will continue to breed for you.

Don't:

Feed the adult beetles! They have too much chitin in them and they can stop up your animals digestive tract.

Add any water source such as a potato or sponge. They do not need it.

Keep a lid on the container! The adults put out a pheromone that can kill the larvae if they get over crowded. (For those of you about to panic please rest assured, I have kept rice flour beetles for over 7 years and have never seen them in my kitchen. This, however is not true of other insects we have done in the past!)

Put them in direct sunlight! Especially in your car, in summer, for 3 hours, when buying a house!

Springtails

Springtails are a great food for very small dart frogs such as pumilio and various thumbnail species. They are also great for froglets just coming out of the water. Please keep in mind that springtails are SMALLER than melanogaster fruit flies!

Do:

Keep the culture in the coolest place in your house! They like it about 65-70 degrees. Too hot and they will die.

Keep a lid on the culture, they will spring out!

Feed your springtails! We use plain bakers yeast that we feed the fruit flies. You can also use coos coos.

Keep the cultures damp, not soaking wet. They like the moisture not the flood!

To culture mine I use all natural charcoal from health food stores. I just take a piece of the charcoal out and tap it in the tank and let the springtails go. The frogs love this! You can get springtails established in you tank, which is not a bad idea, especially if you are rearing froglets. Just put some in the vivarium before you put the frogs in to let them establish themselves. However, always keep a back up stock in case the frogs eat them all!

Don't:

Put them in direct sunlight!

Refrigerate them.

hope that helped.
