Question on female brooks behavior?

toyota85 Aug 18, 2007 11:46 PM

I was just wondering when breeding season starts and how female kings react to it? Do they get more agressive? The reason I ask is because I was dong a little spot cleaning in one my females cage and when I was done I had yet to see her come out, Turns out she was buried in a corner, so I decided to pull her out and check on her and etc. Anyways I picked her and she rattled her tail just a bit, which is nothing new and then put her down. Well as soon as I put her back the little witch tagged me and drew blood! A little history on her: she is about a year old and never has tried to bite before. So I was jsut wondering if she was in season could that have caused it? Or was she just grumpy because I moved her? Sorry for the long post!

Nothing to do with breeding season... snakes seem to have their "moods," just like we do!

I was once asked a loooooooooong time ago "do snakes have different personalities" and I looked at the individual like they were speaking another language but they do have different personalities!

recently I had a male Goini X Brooksi totally flip out... NEVA striked at me as a hatchling (never bit me)... guess he just wasn't in the mood.

That being said... your snake was probably comfortable and you interrupted her comfort so she "let you have it"

or maybe she was hungry?

or maybe u caught her off guard?

as snakes mature... the more u handle them the better their temperament

hope that helped

I'm going to say "ditto" on the moods thing, my Cal King is a male and he still has "Mood swings," LOL. He may be a little more active than your Brooks, I'm not sure, but most of the time I get him out of his cage by letting him crawl out himself. Almost every evening he crawls to the top of his tank, so it's the perfect time to let him out. I've heard from many keepers that the most likely time to be bitten by a king is when you're reaching in the cage to get it out. Most of the time my Cal King is fine, but just the other day when I pulled him out he got pissed and started rattling his tail. He hasn't done that in about 1 & 1/2 years. She'll probably be back to her old self tomorrow, just sounds like an "off" day. This is also the reason that my husband and I are the only ones allowed to reach into his cage. He's really very sweet, been involved with education of children at school, etc.

Sounds like she going to shed soon, being hidden and secluded because she is somewhat blinded even if her eyes are not blue after opening the cage, drawer or whatever the Brooks is thinking FOOD usually, unless un-interested from this cycle, and probably a lil pissed and unsure because of her limited sight

Just one more thought on this. . . I noticed through chat rooms and personal experience that kings are wwwaaaaayyyy more nervous as younger snakes and this is pretty true of all snakes. Mine has calmed down a lot since we've had him. When he was a year old he would musk every single time we took him out of his cage, now he crawls right to us when we let him out, he loves it. As she gets older I'm sure she'll chill out a little.
