How much should a Saharan eat?

carljc72 Aug 20, 2003 11:23 AM

I have recently aquired a saharan uro. He is my 1st lizard. He does not seem to eat very much. I have given a variety of greens and veggies, and a little fruit. He seemed to eat a lot the day I brought him mome but not much since. He has eaten 2 small crickets which he really seemed to enjoy. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Carl

I feed my saharans a little bit every day. Some people feed them a lot every other day. Some saharans eat a lot, others dont eat that much. As long as he is eating, and is not losing weight he is fine. Also, usually they dont much until they are fully acclimated, which can take up to a month. So your little guy is doing fine.

What kind of veggies and greens are you feeding him? Also, are you offering crickets as a diet staple or only as a treat? Too much protein isn't good for uros as they can develop organ problems and gout.

Thanks for the quick responses. I have been feeding him a mix of mustard, collard, and turnip greens. Also carrots, corn, squash, sweet potato with a treat of fruit such as apple, grapes, or blueberries. I don't use much fruit and I have only given him 2 crickets one time...which he devoured and hunted for more. I was just curious because I can't really tell he's eaten much in the last few days. I am hoping I am just an overworried dad. Carl

It is very possible that he just isn't eating in front of you. That will change as the comfort level sets in. My uro wouldn't eat in front of me for about 2-3 months but there was evidence that he did eat, the food was everywhere. Uros are pretty messy eaters
Sounds like your uro's diet is very good. Just give him some time, he'll come around.
