Egg Mystery

Terradas Aug 19, 2007 10:51 AM

Recently I had panicked because I thought one of my females was egg bound due to not laying any clutches. It turns out, she was just hiding them from me in the substrate.

Luckily, all 4 eggs I found are very healthy looking, no dent and no mold AND they're looking big! My only concern now is that The previous 4 eggs I've been incubating have all molded over and died and I want to avoid that with these new surprises.

I'm using hatch-rite as a medium and I'm un-impressed so far. Should I change to vermiculite or is there maybe another reason why my eggs could be molding over prematurely?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Too much moisture or the substrate. I use damp vermiculite and have no mold problems and don't hear of many.

Its difficult to be sure just by a description .But if eggs are doing well in a cage and not so well in your care.My guess is that your using too much water in your incubating material.

I use vermiculite have hatched out several hundred eggs and the test I use is if I squeeze a pinch of vermiculite very hard a little moisture comes out .Not very scientific but what im saying is you want the material barely damp not wet.
