Breeding Question

JoshMolone Aug 19, 2007 03:50 PM

Does the size really affect the number of eggs produced by the female? I have a very large female, and a small male. Will it differ from large to small males? And any tips on first breeding? I just bought a Bumblebee package. And I have one large female, one small Spider female, and one Pastel male.

Thanks,
Josh

Size matters more for the female than the male. The female should be at least 3 years old and at least 1500g before being bred. If she's younger or smaller, she could easily slug out or become egg bound. Females use a LOT of their body weight when producing eggs -- that's why they don't gain weight while gravid. Every gram of their extra weight is converted into an equal gram of egg weight. After laying, they are nothing but minimal bones and skin. It takes a lot out of them, so a female should be well fed with a good calcium store before breeding.

You need to know her age and her weight, not just that she's "large".

She is 54 inches, about 4 and a half foot ... Im not positive on her weight (Getting new scale). We have had her for only 4 years or so, and planning to breed her to a pastel next season. Then the next season, im going to try to breed my Male Pastel to my Female Spider. If I get lucky, ill get some Bumblebees!

Seeing as your spider is a baby, you need to wait at least 2 years until you can breed her, most likely 3. Or you run the risk of killing her.
