petting?

Drako32186 May 22, 2003 01:05 AM

Someone told me that, in general, leopard geckos don't like being pet or stroked....is this true? at a certian age, maybe?

I’ve found that most leos don’t like to be petted or stroked. Some males will allow it, but most other geckos will become annoyed. I try to stroke their tummy, or under the fat part of their tail. They don’t seem to mind this much. You need to figure out what your gecko is cool with. Good luck.

I have two geckos. One male one Female. The male is very docile will let you pick him up and stroke his head/back, he doen't care. Although he won't have his tail touched he trys to walk away when you do that. The female on the other hand I can not handle because she go mental when you handle her. Not in a violent way, but she just runs flat out, out of your hands. I've handled them botht he same when I got them but no matter how much I try to tame her she won't adjust so now I just leave her be.

Peggie and Nike are two of my geckos I really have to watch when I'm handling them. Some geckos will just jump right out of your hands if your not careful. My nicest female albino, Peggy, is what i call 'clumsy'. She is not as coordinated as most of my leos, are requires extra attention when she's out of her cage. She has learned to calm down with time. Babies and bilzzard seem to be especially flighty, in my experience. I'd try putting your hand in your females cage every day. After time she will start to trust you, and not look at you as a preditor. Keep working with her and im sure your guys can find a medium.

All of the geckos that I have raised from a baby like or will permit being pet. A few of them like it when I rub under thier head, on thier throte. None of them like having thier tails touched at all, they are sensitive there.
I swear one of my geckos looks forward to it, he is awesome!I LOVE this guy!
Here is a picture, it is hard to tell from this picture, but check out the large head on him, I haven't seen another gecko with a head big like his:
